It looks like Wales has achieved some sort of independence. The first of the new .wales and .cymru domains will be available in a few days, while the Welsh National Assembly has already announced its new websites: assembly.wales and cynulliad.cymru.
Aside from the National Assembly, the new Internet addresses will be acquired by Daily Post, Wales Online, the Welsh Rugby Union, Gwalia, Golwg360, Bloc, Portmeirion, Atlantic PLC and Orchard. The Internet domain controller Nominet’s Wales advisory group claimed that the launch of new Internet domains will herald a new era for Wales in the digital world, with this opportunity later being extended to all companies and individuals as part of the next phase of the project.
Indeed, the new domains will go on sale for companies in November 2014, while ordinary people will be able to get such domains only in March 2015. The industry observers note that the Welsh domains follow in the footsteps of the Scottish .scot domain. The latter was launched in July and saw both the yes and no independence referendum campaigning groups adopt the patriotic domain.
The presiding officer of the National Assembly admitted that brand recognition is very important for businesses and entities to successfully promote their products and services, so .wales and .cymru brand will be a good help to Welsh companies, trying to make their voice heard around the world.
It is also known that .wales/.cymru domain will also be used by all major political parties in Wales, the local government, Wales Federation of Young Farmers Club, Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, Only Men Aloud, Cowbois and Traveline Cymru in the future.
