The news that one of The Pirate Bay founders, imprisoned Peter Sunde, would have to attend his father’s funeral wearing handcuffs has sparked the outrage of thousands of supporters, but fortunately, the humanity has prevailed. Peter’s brother, Mats Kolmisoppi, announced on Facebook that following all the attention focused on Peter’s predicament, he was allowed to pay his final respects with dignity.
Peter Sunde has been held in a Swedish prison for copyright offenses connected with The Pirate Bay, but outside attention periodically turns to the conditions of his imprisonment. First, the reports were about such things as seclusion, boredom and a bland diet, but these can largely be considered an inevitable outcome of incarceration. However, other unexpected events are those that carry the most impact with the public. One of such events emerged last week.
After being seriously ill for a long time, Peter Sunder’s and Mats Kolmisoppi’s father passed away. According to decision at his high-security prison, Peter was given permission to attend the funeral, but was warned he would be wearing handcuffs. This unnecessary measure, applied to a person who has only 50 days left to spend in prison for copyright violation, struck a chord with thousands of supporters, including a group of Hollywood workers.
Mats Kolmisoppi, Peter’s brother, hasn’t commented much about his imprisonment before, but the latest events made him to describe the situation on his Facebook page – this is how everyone knew about what was going on. Now Mats updated Peter’s supporters on how things went, and the news was good. He wrote that the funeral went quietly, and Peter was eligible to carry the coffin and attend the memorial service, with the guards being very respectful and keeping in the background.
It is unknown why the prison system decided to change its mind and treat Peter and his family with compassion, but Mats was thankful for people who offered public support and any effect that had on the decision. However, he also pointed out that it didn’t change the fact that Sunder spent the last week living with the threat that handcuffs could be put to use.
So far, Peter Sunde has only 50 days left to spend in prison for The Pirate Bay-related copyright infringement offenses.
